WHO WE ARE

There is a long history of social services being provided to Jewish residents of Hawaii. This
culminated in 1991 with the formalization of Jewish Community Services as a program of the
Jewish Federation of Hawaii.  When the Federation closed its doors in 1998, the need for
social services still existed.

Therefore, in 1998, Jewish Community Services (JCS) was incorporated as a nonprofit 501
(c)(3) agency; serving the Jewish community in Hawaii. The generous support of the
community enables JCS to continue to provide these services.

Jewish Community Services is a nonprofit organization and all contributions are tax
deductible.

  •  Individual donors
  • Jewish community organizations
  • Private foundations

Other sources of client assistance funds include:
  • Jeanette A. LeVine Fund of Temple Emanu-EI:  This fund helps those Jewish seniors
who are unable to care for themselves stay in their own homes whenever possible.
  • Arthur Murray Fund:  This fund provides emergency funds for qualifying persons in
    extreme need.
  • Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA): FEMA provides rent and mortgage
    assistance in special circumstances.

WHAT WE DO

Jewish Community Services maintains the confidentiality of those it helps. Therefore, details
in the following examples of Jewish individuals needing help have been altered.

  • Seniors need help.
Mr. A cannot live alone and his only relative lives on the mainland; JCS helps him find a
    suitable care home in Hawaii.

  • People with disabilities need support.
JCS helps Ms. B navigate through the necessary procedures to secure assistance from
city, state, federal programs or other charitable organizations, and then follows up with
    necessary support.

  • Parents are unemployed, homeless and hungry.
JCS helps Family C get out of a shelter and into a place of their own through. JCS
assists Family D in accessing the Food Bank.  JCS provides food gift cards for families
    in need during the holidays.

  • Seniors need various kinds of support.
JCS arranges to pay for bus passes, taxi or handi-van to take Mr. E to a doctor's
appointment.  JCS refers a family to mortuaries and rabbis for the funeral of a loved
one.  Using the various resources available [such as the Jeanette A. LeVine Fund],
JCS makes arrangements for Mr. F to receive the support services he needs to stay in
    his own home.

  • People need help in emergencies.
JCS gives practical assistance and peace of mind to Mrs. G, who has to be
hospitalized, by helping to find a caregiver for her children.  JCS refers Ms. H, who has
no other options, to the Arthur Murray Fund.
