The author, who lives in Honolulu 3 months of the year to be near her sister and extended family, was a close friend for 50 years with Joan Didion, the most acclaimed writer of her generation. They met when Sara was 27 and Joan was 36, just as Joan was beginning to be widely acclaimed for her original voice and style.
Both Sara and Joan were born in California, went to U.C. Berkeley, and then to N.Y.C.
